Princess Caroline of Monaco hit by divorce rumours as husband is pictured kissing younger woman

Speculation is growing that Princess Caroline of is set to split from her German husband after he was allegedly photographed kissing another woman in .

Princess Caroline, 52, spent Christmas in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana while her husband Prince Ernst August of Hanover was in Phuket.

The German celebrity magazine Bunte published photographs of the prince with another woman today.

That triggered other reports in the German media on long-standing rumours of a divorce later this year.

A divorce could be one of the most costly in history. The prince has a wealth estimated at more than £5billion in property, estates and investments and under German and French law Princess Caroline would be entitled to half.

'Betrayed!' said the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper. 'Poor Caroline. What does this scandal mean for Monaco?' said the country's biggest selling newspaper Bild.

And Bunte, which has in the past had a direct line into royal houses of Hanover and Grimaldi, said: 'The First Lady of Monaco simply cannot accept being publicly duped in such a manner by her marriage partner.'

The pictures were taken on Phuket's Freedom Beach and show the prince - who is a distant cousin of Queen Elizabeth II - in the sea with the woman, who bears an uncanny resemblance to his long-suffering spouse.

Princess Caroline and daughter celebrate in Monaco as husband Ernst remains absent

Despite her husband's absence, Princess Caroline enjoys the army parade to mark Monaco's National Day with daughter Alexandra

Princess Caroline celebrated Monaco's National Day with ten-year-old daughter Alexandra on Thursday, but there was still no sign of her husband Ernst of Hanover by her side.

Fifty-two-year-old Caroline and Ernst, 55, who married in January 1999, have not been seen together since June, according to reports.

In September Caroline moved back to the principality and enrolled Princess Alexandra in a local school, while Ernst remained in the family home in Fontainebleau, near Paris.

At the time Monaco’s royal palace released a statement denying rumours the pair had split.

More recently, Caroline's long-time family friend Maryam Sachs has refuted reports that she is romantically involved with the sometimes controversial German aristocrat.

But Ernst's absence at one of the most important events on the Monegaesque calendar adds to speculation that all is not well between the couple.

Not that there seemed to be any signs of trouble on the face of young Princess Alexandra of Hanover at the annual festivities.

The ten-year-old beamed alongside half-sister Charlotte, from her mother's marriage to the late Stefano Casiraghi, on the palace balcony as she watched the annual army parade pass by.

Earlier, Alexandra and Charlotte had joined mum Caroline and brothers Andrea and Pierre at the traditional Thanksgiving Mass in Monaco's Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Among the other members of the Grimaldi family taking part was Prince Albert, who led the celebrations, and Princess Stephanie.

Princess Caroline 'to divorce third husband', reigniting fears of a Monaco royal curse

Separate lives: Princess Caroline of Monaco has not been seen with her husband Prince Ernst of Hanover since early June

Princess Caroline of was said to be about to divorce - leading to claims that a 700-year-old curse on her family had struck again.

Reports in say that the third marriage of 's eldest daughter is all but over. The 52-year-old is living a separate life from her husband Prince Ernst of Hanover, 55.

'It looks like the end,' said a source at French magazine Point de Vue, which specialises in European royal families.

'Both Caroline and Ernst have been at the centre of scandals in the past, but this really is breaking their hearts.'

The split after ten years of marriage is the latest to afflict the Grimaldis, the name of Monaco's royal family.

Local superstition says a 13th century witch cursed them, warning none would have a long or successful marriage.

Caroline, who has not been seen with Ernst since early June, has left the family chateau in Fountainbleau, south of , to return to Monaco. She divorced her first husband and her second died in a boating accident.

Her sister Stephanie married a bodyguard, whom she divorced before marrying and divorcing a circus acrobat.

Caroline's mother, Princess Grace - former film star Miss Kelly - was killed in a car crash, leaving her devoted husband, the late Prince Rainier III, distraught.
